Triund Trek

Beneath the mighty Dhauladhar range, Triund is a magnificent ridge. This trek is almost a rite of passage for travelers visiting this Tibetan city-in-exile, situated about ten kilometres from the bustling town centre of McLeodganj.

So, why Triund's visit? Here are 5 arguments for visiting Triund with your friends from someone who's been there:

Amazing Views: Along every bend of its trail, Triund offers excellent panoramic views of the Dhauladhars. The clouds descend to give you company once you reach the grassy meadows where the trek ends, and the view is completely magnificent! For a long, long time, anyone who fail to carry their cameras along will regret it.

Easy: It will take four hours to complete the Triund trek at best and though quite a few manage to do it within two hours. Also for an unseasoned trekker, the trail itself is not too gruelling. You can also hire a taxi to Gallu Devi Temple, the starting point of the trek, if you want to save energy for the main trek, instead of starting at Mcleodganj. On the way, you can even find a few stalls selling refreshments, so you can even split the trek into sections and rest on the way for a while.

Adventurous: Moving to the valley of Triund is an accomplishment in itself. The more adventurous, however, might try to hike further to Kareri Lake, where you'll find rock-cut caves to explore. There are no wild animals in the city, at least not during the day, so if you have the energy, feel free to check the place out.

Better: While you can do the Triund trek in a day, if you want to spend the night up in the valley, you can hire a two-man tent for around Rs 500. There you will discover a lot of business-stayovers at Triund are very common, particularly among foreigners.

There are two different advantages to pitching camp. Next, the awe-inspiring sunrise and sunset you get to see, not to mention the star-studded night sky. Second, you can hike to Kareri Lake early in the morning and make the trek even more worthwhile.

Waterfalls: From Triund, there are a number of return tracks, one of which passes along the upper reaches of the waterfalls of Bhagsu. Hiking down alongside the gushing waters would put a high note on your trek to a close, wouldn't you say?

Tips for the trek to Triund:

You are encouraged to take a guide along with you. It would also be done by someone who has done the trek before and knows his way around.

If you want to set up camp for a day before starting the trek, the Gallu Devi Temple area has a few guesthouses.

Then what are you going to wait for? Come and visit soon, and don't forget to wear your hiking boots!
