Chandigarh and Delhi are both a short drive apart. Triund treks can be done at any time of year, however monsoon is not a good time to go because the track can turn slick and dangerous. It is also fairly cold in December and January. Triund hikes are best done in May and June, before the rainy season begins, and late September to November, before the weather turns too cold.

A day hike is a reasonable alternative, but one word of caution should be kept in mind. The entire trek could take up to 12 hours back and forth if you don't want to spend the night staring at the stars. Personally, I would recommend stargazing in the evening.
