Chadar Zanskar
Chadar Zanskar
Without a doubt, the Chadar Trek, also known as Zanskar Gorge or The Frozen River, is the most thrilling hike in the Himalayas. Chadar is derived from the Arabic term chadar, which literally means "white sheet."
The Chadar Hike is a challenging and one-of-a-kind trek in India. The multiday Chadar walk across the ice Zanskar River in Ladakh takes place from late January to late February or possibly March, depending on the weather. Walking on the thick glass of an icy river with big mountains on either side is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The Chadar Trek, at an elevation of 11,150 feet, feels like a trip to the North Pole. Temperatures drop to 30 degrees at night, requiring all food and drink to be hauled in on sleds and shelter in caves. The Chadar Trek is on many people's bucket lists, especially thrill-seekers who love difficult walks. The locals are known as Zanskaris, and their primary professions are cattle ranching and farming.
