Frozen River Trekking
Are you an adventure seeker, an adrenaline junkie, or a seasoned hiker? So, what do you have to lose? In Ladakh, go on the world-famous Chadar Trek.
The Chadar Trip is a winter journey through Ladakh's Zanskar region. The expedition takes place in the winter, when the Zanskar river freezes and forms Chadar, which literally means "cover." Because Zanskar's centre is blocked off from the rest of Ladakh, the journey began as a locals' winter transit route, but it quickly became a major magnet for travellers and hikers from all over the world.
The hike is not easy; it is considered one of the most difficult walks in the world. The hike is around 75 kilometres in length. In the Zanskar region, you sleep in tents and visit communities such as the Tilat Sumdo, Shingra Kongma, Tibb, and Nerak.
The temperature in the region drops below freezing throughout the winter, with readings as low as -20/25 degrees Celsius at times. The region is also bare of vegetation at this time, with the exception of a few Juniper trees here and there. If you're lucky, you might spot a snow leopard along the way, as well as some spectacular ice waterfalls!
