Frozen Zanskar River

Frozen Zanskar River

Due to heavy snowfall, the 230-kilometer-long highway that passes through the 5,000-meter-high Penzi La pass is blocked in the winter, making it impossible to cars. When the cold season arrives, however, the Zanskaris have long had another option for getting out of the valley.

The Zanskar River rages through the deep Himalayan valleys in the summer, but it drops to -40°C in the winter, freezing its upper layers. As a result, Zanskar is linked to the rest of the region by the Chadar trek, a spectacular ice trail.

From crystal-clear ice fields to precariously hanging ledges, the Chadar walk takes you through a range of frozen settings. The strain on the frozen surface is considerable due to the fast-moving water beneath the ice sheets, as well as the ever-changing weather. Every few days, the ice layers are disrupted, fracturing, toppling, and settling.
