The Chadar Trek
The Chadar Trek
Zanskar is unique in India in that it is closed off from November to June [approximately 7-8 months each year]; automobile access is currently only available when the Pensi La opens up, allowing road travel from Padum and neighbouring settlements to Kargil and beyond to Leh or Srinagar.
As a result, this 7000-square-kilometer zone, which sits at an elevation of around 12,000 to 13,000 feet, is completely closed off. After joining its many tributaries, the Zanskar river flows north-east through the spectacular Zanskar valley, merging with the Indus river near Nimmu, on the Leh-Kargil road, just outside of Leh.
As the Zanskar river transforms from a rapid river into a white blanket of ice during winter, the trekker will be treated to a frozen spectacle of glass ice ranging from a bluish tinge to golden yellow that is seen during the few hours when sunlight reaches directly into the gorge to the milky whitish on a moonlit night, a frozen spectacle of glass ice ranging from a bluish tinge to golden yellow will be seen during the few hours
