Ultimate Kedarkantha Trekking Guide: What You Should Know Before You Go

The Great Himalayas invite you to the stunning and most well-known Kedarkantha trek if you're searching for a winter walk through the snow. Located in the western Garhwal of the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. The start of the captivating 25-kilometer Kedarkantha trip is the base camp Sankri, a village in the Uttarkashi district located at 6,400 feet inside the Govind wildlife sanctuary.

For the Kedarkantha Trek, how do you get to Sankri Base Camp?

The trip begins in Dehradun. Dehradun to Sankri village is around 198 miles away, and the travel there takes 10 to 11 hours. Around 5 AM and 7 AM, public buses go directly towards Sankri. If you miss the bus, don't worry; you can catch a connecting bus until Purola or Hanol, where you can switch to another bus to get to Sankri, or you can take a taxi. Or ride in a taxi or a shared jeep.

If you don't want to ride the bus, you can take a taxi or drive your own vehicle the 8 hours to Sankri. Driving through picturesque villages, twisty roads, pine and oak trees, and snow-capped mountains while going through lush green meadows is truly nice. The Tons river can be seen flowing next to you.

Delhi to Kedarkantha Trek

You have three options if you want to travel from Delhi to the trek's starting point, Sankri Base Camp.

Choice 1

Take a taxi, cab, or your own car to get to Sankri from Delhi. This will need travelling 430+ kilometres over a period of 12 to 13 hours via Dehradun, Mussoorie, and Naitwar. The roads from Delhi to Dehradun are in decent shape. The route is uneven and rocky for about 50 odd kilometres between Dehradun and Sankri. There aren't many options there, so please prepare ahead for your lodging and parking.

Choice 2

From the New Delhi station, take a train to Dehradun. DEHRADUN SHTBDI (12017), DDN JANSHTBDI (12055), NANDA DEVI EXP (12205), MUSSOORIE EXP (14041), and DEHRADUN EXP are the best. Almost all trains arrive before dawn.

You can depart from Dehradun at 5 a.m. and 7 a.m., respectively, on a local bus, in a shared taxi waiting outside the train station, or by hiring a private cab for your group.

Choice 3

Take a Volvo bus from the Anand Vihar Metro station or RK Ashram Marg New Delhi. These buses run from Rk Ashram until 6-7 pm and from Anand Vihar bus station until 11 pm.

You can take a local bus from Dehradun again at 5 and 7 am, respectively, or a shared taxi outside the train station, or you can rent a private cab for your group.

There are two ways for people to reach the Kedarkantha trek from Mumbai or the rest of India. Direct flights are available to Dehradun, from whence you can take a bus or car to Sankri.

The second choice is to plan the aforesaid itinerary from Delhi by an aircraft or train via Delhi.

Height and distance of the Kedarkantha Trek: The trek begins in Sankri, the basecamp, at 6,400 feet, and climbs to a peak altitude of 12,500 feet. It takes 25 kilometres to hike through gorgeous trails on the Kedarkantha Trek in order to reach the summit. When you obtain Sankri, a 360-degree panoramic view will begin to appear.

When to go on the Kedarkantha Trek?

Due to the significant snowfall during the winter, few treks are accessible. The opposite side of Kedarkantha receives just enough snowfall for you to reach the peak at 12000 feet, making it the pinnacle of winter adventures. Snowfall is possible from the middle of December through March.

Peak winter months, from December to April, will be the ideal time to explore this location. Although you may visit any month of the year, you must see it in the winter when the snow turns it into a winter paradise. It has lovely campgrounds where you may camp and take in the snowfall, such Juda ka Talab and Har gaon.
